Dead Week? More Like Distraction Week

Well as every college student knows, the week before finals week is Dead Week. This term will make most students cringe knowing that the inevitable finals' studying has begun. Or at least that's what I thought in my case...

Anyway the week started and I had the most efficient-looking study plans all drawn out, and told myself that I will follow them precisely and not become distracted with other things. I had even drawn out time for breaks, meals and free time. I thought I would knock out all my studying easily and be able to relax for the most part during finals week.

Well, here I am and its finals week, and I have basically just started my studies tonight. Isn't it funny how that always happens? I am sure this has happened to most if not all students. I have come to the conclusion that this is due to two culprits in my case. The first being my poor study habits, the second being digital technology. I have learned in class this semster that technology is great in many ways but also not so much in other ways. This being one of the ways in which technology is not so good.

The computer is to blame most for my studying distractions. With my new found love for the website Stumble Upon and of course the always reliably distracting Facebook countered my attempts to study with ease. For no apparent reason I would just spend hours on these sites, telling myself five more minutes, every five minutes. It was almost a joke.

At least I'm not alone though, as I see most of our class posting their blogs and comments as I type this, and virtually every students' computer I walk past is on Facebook. I guess what I am trying to get at here is that we cant let technology take over our lives. We, including myself, need to learn some self control and figure out when to stop and get to business so to speak. School is hard enough and now with internet and digital technology it has become a whole lot tougher.

  1. I completely agree with you on this. I really think focusing on studying and finishing projects would be so much easier if there weren't a thousand different distractions like Facebook to completely derail my train of though. I've actually noticed that if I disconnect the internet and use the public computers here that don't have any distractions like games, I'm able to finish everything so much faster, and it's generally better quality.

  2. Haha, the same thing has happened to me already. Sat down, had everything ready, then just said to myself "Oh, I guess it couldn't hurt if I got on my computer for a while..." A couple hours later, I still haven't gotten anything worthwhile done.
